Coolangatta – Kuala Lumpur

After spending Wednesday running around like mad and getting a whole bunch of last minute stuff sorted, which included taking the cat to the cattery, where an uncomfortably tame peacock decided to walk right up to her in her cat carrier (what the!?) to check her out, we managed to get everything we needed to do sorted.  We had a lovely evening catching up with my brother in law Iain and his wife Sonia, who I am extremely pleased to say has the same fantastic taste in wine as I do! Go the moscato!  It was a little stressful in the last few days for everyone as Sonia was in hospital and then Andrew’s dad was rushed to the cardiac ICU as well.  Apparently he will be in for a few days and is having some tests, so we wish him well and hope he is feeling okay.

What a restless nights sleep  before we left though! I had the weirdest dreams about all the things I was paranoid not to forget! We woke at 3.45am to a drizzly and humid morning (by Brisbane standards) and Andrew’s brother who is in Brisbane at the moment, kindly picked us up and drove us to Coolangatta for our departure. About 3 minutres into the journey I had realised I couldn’t remember packing my sunglasses (prescription ones too, so not easily replaced on a trip) but figured if that was the worst thing to forget, I could probably live with it.  Once we arrived at the airport and I was looking for a pen to complete my passenger card, guess what I found. Yes, I hadn’t forgotten my sunnies. Hooray.

After an almost ontime departure from Coolangatta, we are in transit to Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia. We did a bit of duty free shopping and Andrew picked up a gorgeous JAG watch, much cheaper than the ones he’d previously looked at in Brisbane.  Air Asia X have my fave budget long haul aircraft in the Airbus A330-300. – configured 3-3-3.  Andrew and I are in the middle 3 the second row after the Premium layflat seats on offer with Air Asia X.  They look fantastic and at only double the price (which is extremely cheap) we paid, they are great value from what I’ve seen. Andrew is currently sitting back and relaxing with one of the onboard Personal Media Players that are for rent during the flight.  He’s  already watched a Chinese film named Aftershock and said it was quite sad (I think he was even a little teary!).  I’ve flicked between episodes of Family Guy and Entourage and even a little of the Saturday Night Live 25th anniversary show.  We were served our prepurchased meal quite early into the flight and it was Nasi Lemak and very popular Malaysian meal of rice booked with pandan leaves and coconut cream served with sambal and chicken rendang with peanuts and dried anchovies and a boiled egg.  It was fantastic, although my nose started to run like it was doing a marathon thanks to the sambal. We were highly impressed and apart from Andrew’s claims of having a better meal on Garuda, we both felt it was pretty good!

There are still 4 hours (half way) to go and we’re still not out of Australian airspace, and in about 2 hours or so we will pass over Darwin.  From there it’s nice and breezy into Asia.  There is a little bit of turbulence at the moment, which is expected considering the monsoonal weather pattern we are flying across in northern Australia at this point in time.  At my last check of the weather situation, it seemed like there was a chance of a low becoming a cyclone off Queensland.
That’s all I have to update, at this point in time, but we are both really looking forward to arriving into Kuala Lumpur.  We are staying at a hotel located right in the supposedly fantastic area of Chinatown in KL, however my goal is to attempt to find the absolutely ultimate Malaysian Laksa whilst in Malaysia!!
